New East of England Investment Fund Launches

2026 EoEIFL LM 1

Last week, the ip21 team attended the launch of the East of England Investment Fund, a new initiative from the British Business Bank that will make £140 million of funding available to small and medium-sized businesses across the region.

The fund covers Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, and aims to improve access to finance for businesses in rural, coastal and urban communities. Particular focus has been placed on sectors that are important to the regional economy, including life sciences, agri-tech and advanced manufacturing.

The East of England is already an important contributor to the UK's business landscape. Figures presented at the launch event showed that the region accounts for around 10% of the UK's SME population, 11% of SME employment, 9% of SME turnover and 9% of the UK's high-growth enterprises. These figures highlight the significant role that businesses across the region play in supporting economic activity and innovation.

Businesses will be able to access a range of funding options, including:

  • Debt finance from £25,000 to £2 million.
  • Equity investment of up to £5 million for early-stage and growing businesses.

Funding will be provided through appointed local fund managers, who will set the eligibility criteria and manage the application process.

The launch also comes at a time when access to investment remains an important issue for many growing businesses. According to market insights shared during the event, equity deal activity in the East of England declined during 2024, with deal numbers falling by 26% and investment values decreasing by 20% compared with the previous year. The new fund is intended to help address funding gaps by increasing access to both debt and equity finance.

For many SMEs, obtaining suitable funding remains a challenge, particularly when investing in research and development or commercialising new technologies. Initiatives such as the East of England Investment Fund may help to address some of these barriers by providing additional funding opportunities across the region.

Further information about the fund, including details of the participating fund managers and how to apply, can be found on the British Business Bank website. Find out more: https://www.british-business-bank.co.uk/finance-options/nations-and-regions-investment-funds/east-of-england-investment-fund

We welcome the introduction of the fund and the additional support it could provide to businesses across the East of England. It will be interesting to see how the funding is used by the region's innovative companies, and we look forward to seeing the impact it may have on business growth, investment and innovation across the region in the years ahead.
