Melanie is a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and a European Trademark & Design Attorney accredited to appear before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in both trademark and design matters. She has audience rights before the UK's dedicated IP court, the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC), and is a member of IP Professional bodies such as CITMA, ECTA, INTA and AIPPI.
Her practice areas can be summarised as trade mark and brand registration and protection, design registration and protection, IP strategy, IP litigation and dispute resolution be that here in the UK or globally.
Melanie has a wealth of experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters, in the fields of trade marks, designs and trade dress. She advises a wide range of clients, from individuals or small companies and start-ups with no intellectual property experience, to major international corporations with substantial IP portfolios. As such, Melanie is very experienced at providing tailored commercial advice to meet individual client’s needs.
She counsels clients in brand creation and protection as well as IP transactions. This involves strategic advice on developing, applying for, managing cross-border IP portfolios, clearing and protecting trade marks. Moreover, she gives legal advice regarding IP-related contractual matters and she routinely negotiates, drafts and reviews contracts, especially license, co-operation and co-existence agreements.
She joined IP21 in 2002 from another IP Practice and subsequently qualified as an Authorised Representative before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and became a Chartered UK Trade Mark Attorney (UK Registered Trade Mark Attorney as was pre-CITMA’s Royal Charter). Before that she was a Copenacre indentured Apprentice with the MoD before working on several engineering projects, both in-country and abroad with NATO and the armed forces.
Within the IP Profession, Melanie has been a member of INTA’s Non-Traditional Trade Marks Committee since 2016 and currently Chairs their Europe and Central Asia subcommittee. And between 2016 and 2019 she has also been the recipient of Trademark Lawyer of the Year-UK and/or Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year-UK Women in Law Awards, Lawyer Monthly Magazine.
