Ian is a graduate engineer from Sheffield University and Ruhr Universität Germany. He possesses a Masters of Engineering and a Masters in Science. He worked at Ford in Germany and a leading French patent practice before joining ip21 in 2001. He is fluent in French having a French Scientific Baccalaureate in Natural Sciences. He is also fluent in German, Portuguese and Spanish and has extensive experience working in the materials science and structural engineering groups of the automotive, aeronautical and oil/gas industries. He has been entrusted to handle some of the world’s most valuable trademarks in particular whilst working for one of the world’s largest consortium of luxury brands.
In his current practice, he advises both UK based and multi-national clients in high tech electronics and optics in particular in the field of medical devices, telecommunication, touch sensors and green energies. His high profile clients have included Volvo, Van Cleef & Arpels, Alfred Dunhill, Bobst, Fujitsu Siemens, Laird Technologies, EADS, The Wellcome Trust and UKAEA. He has an outstanding track record in arguing for the grant of borderline cases in both written and oral proceedings in front of the European Patent Office. He successfully handles a wide range of Opposition and Technical Board of Appeal cases for UK based and multi-national patent holders.
He assists Counsel in cases in front of the UK Patents County Court and the High Court.
In addition to conventional IP prosecution and enforcement matters, he advises on IP valuation, licensing and general trademark issues.
